Connected Layer Families and Diameter of Polyhedra Semester Project

چکیده
Given a polyhedron, its diameter is defined as the maximum distance between two of its vertices, where the distance between two vertices u and v is the number of edges contained in the shortest u− v path in the skeleton of the polyhedron. Bounding the diameter of a polyhedron with respect to its dimension d and the number n of its facets is one of the most important open problems in convex geometry, a problem about which little is known: the best upper bound is exponential (n ), while we don’t know of any polyhedron with superlinear diameter. In 1957 Hirsch conjectured an upperbound of n − d. Although this bound, called Hirsch bound, holds for many classes of polyhedra, it does not hold in general: after more than fifty years a counter example has been given by Santos ([3]), a polyhedron with dimension 43, 86 facets and diameter more than 43. A polynomial upper bound on the diameter of any polyhedron would imply that a polynomial pivot rule for the simplex method can exist, or it could even suggest such a rule, whereas a class of polyhedra with superpolynomial diameter would rule out this possibility. A promising direction of research is to abstract from the geometric setting and consider simpler combinatorial objects that contain polyhedra as special cases. For the abstract objects with defined notion of diameter, the bound on the abstract diameter would give the bound on the diameter of any polyhedra. One of the most successful applications of this idea is in [1], where the concept of Connected Layer Family is introduced.

Parallelogram-faced isohedra with edges in mirror-planes
Regular (or Platonic) polyhedra have been studied since antiquity, and many other kinds of polyhedra with various symmetry properties have been investigated since then. These include the traditional Archimedean polyhedra (regular-faced with congruent vertex gures), isohedra (polyhedra with faces all equivalent under symmetries of the polyhedron), isogonal polyhedra (all vertices of which are eq...

Polytopes Abstract Polyhedra Ultraconnected Families Abstract Polyhedral Graphs Blueprints It is unclear which of the inequalities shown in this diagram are strict. What we do know for a fact is that for dimension d ≤ 5, the maximum diameter of APGs is strictly larger than the maximum diameter of abstract polytopes (this follows from [AD74] and theorem 5.4.2), and for dimension 4 and 5 the maxi...
متن کاملThe lanthanum(III) molybdate(VI) La4Mo7O27
Crystals of the ortho-rhom-bic phase La(4)Mo(7)O(27) (lanthanum molybdenum oxide) were obtained from a non-stoichiometric melt in the pseudo-ternary system La(2)O(3)-MoO(3)-B(2)O(3). In the crystal structure, distorted square-anti-prismatic [LaO(8)] and monocapped square-anti-prismatic [LaO(9)] polyhedra are connected via common edges and faces into chains along [010]. These chains are arranged...
متن کاملPoly[μ-aqua-aqua-μ4-naphthalene-1,8-dicarboxylato-barium]: a layer structure
The title compound, [Ba(C12H6O4)(H2O)2] n , is represented by a layer-like structure built of BaO8 polyhedra. The asymmetric unit contains a Ba(2+) ion, half a coordinating water mol-ecule and half a μ4-bridging naphthalene-1,8-dicarboxyl-ate (1,8-nap) ligand, the whole structure being generated by twofold rotational symmetry. The carboxyl-ate groups of the 1,8-nap ligands act as bridges linkin...
